Riverside Plaza

NORWICH

In 1999 Sheils Flynn was commissioned by contractors RJ Carter as part of a multidisciplinary team which included LSI Architects. Working within the constraints of fast-track design-build contract, our brief was to develop the detailed design of a high quality contemporary public plaza at the heart of Norwich's new cultural and entertainment quarter. This strategic site has been transformed from a derelict industrial zone on former railway sidings into a new gateway square with a bridge link to the historic town centre.

The main paved space is set out on a grid which follows the alignment of the river crossing and provides a framework for siting trees, street furniture and lighting. The space has already become a busy and vibrant threshold to the adjacent cinemas, restaurants and pubs.
