Watermill Basin

HORNCASTLE

In 1998, a preliminary urban appraisal identified a neglected and forgotten stretch of the River Bain as a potential gateway to Horncastle's Conservation Area. Sheils Flynn's design proposals aim to improve the relationship between the town and its riverside corridor while enhancing the principal shopping streets and open spaces. A refurbished bridge across the river provides access to the town centre from car parks on the opposite bank. A sequence of riffles and pools along the river creates dancing patterns of light while small bays and headlands provide access for fishing, strolling and children's play. The new riverside park is now a much visited, attractive asset for the local community and also functions as an effective flood defence for the town centre.

The completed scheme, including public open spaces, pedestrian routes, riverside enhancement and habitat creation received a Civic Trust Award in 2001. Our client was East Lindsey District Council and the design team included engineers, Ward Associates and quantity surveyors, the WT Partnership.
