This 28 ha of derelict oil terminal land on Canvey Island has outstanding biodiversity value and Sheils Flynn worked with a multi-disciplinary team to design an innovative commercial development which meets a challenging set of ecological and socio-economic objectives.
A small commercial development is designed in accordance with ecoscape principles leaving the rest of the site to be managed for nature conservation. The site’s regenerating scrub and decaying industrial heritage provides an inspiring setting for two viewing mounds sited on the circular bases of former oil storage tanks. The two mounds share a common vocabulary of form but provide contrasting experiences: the first has an arcing cut grass path leading onto an angular viewing platform; while the second offers enclosure as well as views.
Here the visitor reaches an enclosed ‘amphitheatre’ space - a place of contemplation where the sky is the focus of attention.
